Awakening in the Pandemic​

In the winter of 2022, during the first rainfall after Melbourne’s lockdowns, I paused my professional life and embarked on a personal journey of reflection.
After three years of uncertainty during the pandemic, the design industry—like many creative fields—entered a period of stillness. This moment of pause became an opportunity to reconsider direction, rhythm, and purpose.

What began as an unplanned journey gradually unfolded into a turning point.

​Encounter with Traditional Incense Craft​

While traveling in China, I encountered a small workshop illuminated by red lanterns. Upon stepping inside, the gentle aromas of sandalwood, agarwood, and borneol filled the air.

There, I met Mr. Chen—an 83-year-old artisan and inheritor of traditional incense-making techniques documented in classical texts such as Xiang Cheng. Using methods passed down for generations, each incense bead is crafted through a lengthy, hands-on process that emphasizes patience, precision, and respect for materials.

For Mr. Chen, incense is not a product, but a lifelong practice rooted in tradition, observation, and continuity.

​From Reflection to Purpose​

Holding the first string of handcrafted incense beads, I was struck not by any promised effect, but by the warmth of something made slowly, intentionally, and by hand.

In an age shaped by mass production and acceleration, handcrafted objects remind us of time, attention, and cultural roots. This realization became the foundation of Chinese Heritage & Heart Atelier—a space where traditional craftsmanship meets modern life through thoughtful design and cultural storytelling.

Each incense piece is created following traditional compositional principles recorded in historical incense manuals, emphasizing balance, material harmony, and seasonal awareness.

We collaborate with artisan workshops across Yunnan and Fujian, respecting natural cycles and time-honored craftsmanship methods. Processes such as natural drying and sealed maturation are observed not as guarantees of outcome, but as part of preserving traditional working rhythms.

For us, the value of incense lies not in function, but in cultural continuity, craftsmanship integrity, and the quiet presence it brings into daily life.
